It's a funny phrase that I used to hear all the time when I was younger. I haven't heard it much lately, and I wondered why, but then the light bulb went off in my head after reading and watching countless news stories on Katrina.
People seem to have a love/hate relationship with tragedy. Hurricane Katrina...they love to talk about it, it spices up an otherwise ordinary and boring lunch break conversation, but then the hate factor kicks in:
"GAS PRICES ARE GOING TO GO THROUGH THE ROOF NOW WITH THAT HURRICANE DESTROYING EVERYTHING DOWN SOUTH! WHAT AM I GONNA DO?"
I'm convinced that people don't think that things can get any worse for them because they're too busy thinking about themselves and themselves only to really care about the real horror. The horror that people in the South are going through right now. You see the images on TV and it's heartbreaking. I can't imagine trying to rebuild my life having it totally destroyed.
The rest of the country may have tough times ahead with economical issues and whatnot, but it's small beans compared to what they are going through down south.
Yes, it could always be worse.
